I should start by saying a little bit about myself I suppose. My name is Abram, I am 28 years old and I am a firefighter and father. I like to think I’m in good shape and I know what I’m doing when I go to the gym. I am writing this because James asked me if I wouldn’t mind giving advice concerning exercise or fitness and although I am not a trainer or certified by an agency I love to exercise and try many different ways of getting in shape and I like the opportunity to help others. I have never had a weight problem and I understand that something like that has to be experienced to be understood but I am trying to put myself in those shoes and see the world from that perspective concerning this post and the ones that follow. The idea here is first of all to identify YOUR idea of fitness and then identify YOUR goal and then create a plan that will help YOU reach it.
Arnold Schwarzenegger once wrote that everybody is different, but everybody is very much the same. The idea is that even though you are different from me, our bodies are very similar and you can achieve the same results with the same knowledge and action. With that in mind the real question is whether you can make a commitment to yourself once you have the knowledge to continue the action. This is not about 6 minute abs or getting lean in a month or any sort of temporary state. This is about a change in the way you think about your life in general and deciding that you are going to live it differently from this day forward and never look back. That’s what I like about this website. James isn’t selling a quick fix or a simple solution. He’s not even selling you the truth. He’s just telling you the truth. That’s what I’m interested in. The truth is that getting in shape isn’t easy. Easy is probably why you’re having a battle with weight in the first place. Now it’s time to change and the truth is that it’s going to be difficult and there will be setbacks and the odds are against you. The truth is also the FACT that YOU can overcome this if you stick with it. If you eat right and exercise correctly and consistently you will lose weight and become healthier. That is the truth in change.
Today I want you to write down your fitness goals. You need one for the coming week, one for the month and one for the year. It could be to walk a mile or climb a mountain but it needs to be realistic and achievable and you need to keep these goals with you and look at them constantly. Challenge yourself and I will help you any way I can and try to give you different ideas on how to reach your goals. This is of course a 2 sided coin. If you aren’t already eating right then before you step in a gym you need to address your dietary concerns first which is what the rest of this website is about. You can’t drink a can of soda, slam a bag of chips and then run 5 miles. It’s just not going to work. Please send me any questions or concerns and share your goals on this site and with me and each other and we can all work together to help all of us get to where we want to be. That is the TRUTH.

Nice to meet you Abram ! I’m 36 years old. In the last 1.5 I lost 60 lbs. Well 60 in the 1st year..the last 6 months I have been loosing and gaining the same 10 lbs. So I have been at 70 lbs lost depending on what month you ask me. I know this is called maintaining..which is fine. However I wanted to loose about 25-30 more lbs to get to my goal before I maintained. I am a full time working mother of a 3 year old girl. The only time I can get exercise in is to get up an hour before I have to get ready for work and do it, which is 4:45am. I have done/do very little weight training. I know everyone says that you need to do it and it helps in weight loss but I see more results from Cardio so that’s what I mostly do. I have many DVD’s, mostly Leslie Sansone walk at home, or Chris freytag workouts. I also do on occasion an hour of Wii Ea Sports Active, or Dance Central Kinect. As far as eating I follow Weight Watchers and try to drink at least 75 oz of water a day. When I can stick to all that the weight comes off. Here is my problem or question.. Why can’t I stick to it? Just recently I did good for 14 days in a row and then I went off track for one day and waisted a whole week not exercising and eating like crap and gained the 8 lbs back that I lost from doing good. It makes me disapointed and angry at myself that I don’t have that drive I had in the first year. How do I get that back again ??
I LOVE fitness goals (I can’t even believe I’m saying that, but it’s true!). I’ve always been a competitive person, but not a fit one. When I realized that I could channel that into giving myself constant challenges, it was like a light switch went off.
The “truth” part in “truth in change” is the part that means the most to me. We tell ourselves an awful lot of lies from “I can’t change” to “this crazy diet will work.” Lies inhibit change, and I think you hit it on the head: truth is what it’s all about.
Great post, Abram!
My problem is I cannot get motivated.
Coming soon a blog on motivation….=)
